The short version
- Moodle 5.3 is the next LTS release, and the version you will likely run for years.
- You must be on Moodle 4.5 or later to upgrade directly.
- You need PHP 8.3+, a supported database, and a web root pointed at
/public. - Back up, test on staging, then go live in a quiet window.
Moodle 5.3 is scheduled for release on October 5, 2026, and it is the next Long-Term Support (LTS) release after Moodle 4.5. For most schools, training teams and course sellers, this is the version you will run for the next few years.
That makes this upgrade different from a routine point release. If you are on Moodle 4.5, 5.0, 5.1 or 5.2, Moodle 5.3 is where you want to land. If you are on anything older, you have extra steps ahead, and it pays to plan them now.
This checklist walks you through every step in order: what to check before you start, how to run the upgrade, and what to test after go-live. Work through it top to bottom and you will avoid the problems that take most Moodle sites offline during an upgrade.
What makes Moodle 5.3 different
Moodle 5.3 bundles two years of changes from Moodle 5.0, 5.1 and 5.2 into one supported release. Here is what matters for your upgrade plan.
- It is an LTS release.Moodle 4.5 was the last LTS. General bug fixes for 4.5 ended in October 2025, and security fixes end in October 2027. Moving to Moodle 5.3 resets that clock.
- You must be on 4.5 or later to upgrade.Sites on 4.4 or older need a stepping-stone upgrade to 4.5 first. Sites on 3.x may need two or three hops.
- PHP 8.3 is the new minimum.Moodle 5.2 raised the floor from PHP 8.2 to 8.3, and 5.3 keeps it there. PHP 8.4 is also supported.
- Your web root moves.Since Moodle 5.1, the web root lives in a
/publicsubfolder. If you jump from 4.5 or 5.0 straight to Moodle 5.3, you must update your web server’s document root. - Composer is now required.Since Moodle 5.1, Moodle checks for its
vendorfolder at startup and will not load without it. Git-based installs must runcomposer install --no-dev --classmap-authoritative.
Moodle 5.3 server requirements at a glance
| Component | Minimum for Moodle 5.3 |
|---|---|
| Upgrade from | Moodle 4.5 or later |
| PHP | 8.3.0 (8.4 supported), 64-bit only |
| PHP extension | sodium required |
| PHP setting | max_input_vars of 5000 or more |
| PostgreSQL | 16 (plan for 17, see note) |
| MySQL | 8.4 |
| MariaDB | 10.11 (plan for 11, see note) |
| Microsoft SQL Server | 2019 |
| Oracle | Not supported since Moodle 5.0 |
Check the final notes on October 5. The official Moodle 5.3 release notes list PostgreSQL 16 and MariaDB 10.11, but Moodle’s own plugin testing tool now calls PostgreSQL 17 and MariaDB 11 a requirement for 5.3. If you are upgrading your database anyway, go straight to the higher version.

The 12-step Moodle 5.3 update checklist
Tick each item off as you go. Steps 1 to 6 happen before upgrade day, 7 to 9 on the day, and 10 to 12 after go-live.

Steps 10 to 125 Moodle 5.3 upgrade mistakes to avoid
- Upgrading live firstSkipping staging is the fastest way to a blank white screen in front of 2,000 learners. Always break the copy, never the original.
- Trying to jump from 3.x or 4.1 in one goMoodle 5.3 will refuse to upgrade anything older than 4.5. Plan the stepping-stone versions before you start.
- Forgetting the
/publicfolderSites coming from 4.5 or 5.0 often upgrade cleanly, then show a 404 because the web server still points at the old root. - Assuming plugins will just workA single outdated block or theme can stop the upgrade halfway. Check every add-on before upgrade day, not during it.
- Upgrading on a Monday morningPick a low-traffic window, and never the week of exams or course launches.
Do it yourself, or hand it to Moodle experts?
If you have a sysadmin, a staging server and a free weekend, this checklist is all you need. If you do not, or if your site has years of custom code and plugins, a failed upgrade can cost far more than getting help.

When is Moodle 5.3 released?
Moodle 5.3 is scheduled for October 5, 2026. Code freeze was August 31, 2026.
Is Moodle 5.3 an LTS release?
Yes. Moodle 5.3 is the next Long-Term Support release after Moodle 4.5, so it gets longer bug and security support than a standard release.
Can I upgrade from Moodle 4.1 to Moodle 5.3 directly?
No. Moodle 5.3 needs Moodle 4.5 or later as a starting point. Upgrade to 4.5 first, then to 5.3.
What PHP version does Moodle 5.3 need?
PHP 8.3 at minimum, 64-bit only. PHP 8.4 is also supported.
Should I upgrade on release day?
Most production sites should wait two to four weeks for the first point release (5.3.1) and for plugin vendors to ship compatible updates. Use that time to prepare staging.
How long does a Moodle 5.3 upgrade take?
The upgrade script itself can run in under an hour. Planning, plugin checks and staging tests usually take one to two weeks. With Edwiser Upgrade Assist, the full project typically wraps in about two weeks.
