If you are shopping for a paid Moodle theme, the Almond Moodle Theme has probably shown up in your research. It looks good in the demo, it costs less than most premium options, and it covers a lot of Moodle versions. Edwiser RemUI usually shows up in the same search, and the two themes solve slightly different problems.
This comparison sticks to what both vendors publish and what independent reviewers say. Almond genuinely wins in a couple of places, and we say so. The rest of the time, RemUI does more of the work that keeps an LMS running.
The short answer
Pick the Almond Moodle Theme if you want a good-looking front page for the lowest possible one-time cost, you run several sites or subdomains, and you are happy to configure everything through theme settings.
Pick Edwiser RemUI if your Moodle site has real users to manage. RemUI adds role-based dashboards, a drag-and-drop page builder, course enrolment pages, ratings, filtered course catalogues and a plugin family that plugs into reporting, grading and WooCommerce. You pay more, and you get product depth plus a support team.

What is the Almond Moodle Theme?

Almond is a premium Boost child theme from Almond Themes, a small studio that also sells Zuum, EduCard and Wellko. It went on sale in May 2022 and the vendor lists 14 June 2026 as the last update.
The pitch is speed to a finished-looking site. You install the theme, and the blocks and pages from the demo arrive with it, so you are editing rather than building from a blank front page. Almond ships 50+ pre-made blocks organised into 15 categories, unlimited colour schemes, dark and light modes, RTL support and a bundled AlmondPage plugin that lets you spin up standalone information pages without touching code.
There is also a free sibling called AlmondB in the Moodle plugins directory, which is a useful way to sample the studio’s work before paying. AlmondB reports roughly 3,237 sites and 99 fans on its listing, which gives you a rough sense of the family’s reach.
Where Almond genuinely beats RemUI
Two things, and both matter to the right buyer.
Unlimited domains for one price. The current Almond licences on the vendor’s checkout cover unlimited domains and subdomains. If you host twelve departmental Moodle sites or resell training portals on subdomains, that is a real saving. RemUI licences count sites, and a Business licence covers two, usually staging plus production.
No renewal. Almond charges once. The vendor states the licences are not subscriptions and that updates are free for life for the Moodle version you purchased. RemUI’s annual plan renews if you want to keep support and updates flowing, although the lifetime licence removes that if you prefer to pay once.
There is a wrinkle worth knowing before you treat Almond as a pay-once purchase forever. The licences are sold per Moodle version. At the time of writing the Moodle 5.2 licence costs $99 and the Moodle 5.1 licence costs $59, listed as separate products. The FAQ promises free updates for the Moodle version you bought. So if you upgrade Moodle from 5.1 to 5.2 next year, budget for the possibility of buying again. Ask the vendor directly before you commit, because that single answer changes the cost comparison.
What is Edwiser RemUI?

RemUI is Edwiser’s flagship Moodle theme and it has been in the market for around a decade. Edwiser reports 12,313 customers, 231 reviews and a 4.9 average rating on its own product page, and it names institutional users including San Diego State University, Norwich University, Clarkson, the University of Wollongong, Strathmore and Symbiosis.
The theme is a Boost child, so anything that works with Boost works with RemUI. What separates it from most theme purchases is that RemUI behaves less like a skin and more like a set of tools bolted onto Moodle.
- Visual Personalizer. Change colours, typography and layout with a live preview instead of saving and refreshing. Smart colour management applies a scheme across the site.
- Page Builder. Drag and drop, with 85+ blocks and 60+ components, 15+ page templates and dedicated pricing page templates. This is how people build marketing pages, about pages and course landing pages inside Moodle rather than on a separate WordPress site.
- Role-based dashboards. Learners see progress and recent feedback. Teachers get course progress, manage courses and course analytics blocks. Admins get enrolment and registration information plus quick actions.
- Course experience. A designed course page, an enrolment page built to sell the course, a course archive with filters for price, rating, level and language, and a ratings and reviews system for social proof.
- Focus mode and dark mode. Focus mode strips distractions from activity pages. Dark mode is built in, and admins choose which pages it applies to.
- Accessibility widgets. A reading guide, content and colour adjustment controls, a big cursor and an option to stop animations.
- Ready-made site designs. Corporate training, school, university and personal training layouts, available in the PRO plan and above, plus a demo cloner so you can start from a finished site instead of an empty one.
Independent reviewers back up the range. MooDIY’s 2026 Moodle theme roundup names RemUI as the most feature-rich premium theme in its comparison and praises the builder, while flagging that it can be resource intensive and carries a learning curve. That is a fair read, and worth taking seriously if your hosting is thin.
The seven comparisons that actually decide this
1. Building pages
Almond gives you blocks and settings. You pick a block, fill in the fields, and it appears. It works, it is quick, and it does not require any design skill. The AlmondPage plugin extends this to standalone information pages.
RemUI gives you a builder. You arrange components on a canvas, save page templates, and reuse layouts across pages. If you only need a decent home page, Almond gets you there. If your marketing team wants to ship a new landing page every month without filing a developer ticket, the builder is the difference.
One caveat on RemUI: the Page Builder and the dynamic dashboard blocks are not in the Starter Suite. They start at the next plan up. Check the plan table before you assume a feature is included.
2. Running the LMS day to day
This is the widest gap, and it has nothing to do with looks.
Almond restyles Moodle. Your dashboard, course pages and reports stay as Moodle built them.
RemUI changes what those screens do. Teachers get course analytics without opening a report. Admins see enrolment activity on the dashboard. Learners see progress and feedback on landing. If your Moodle site has ten courses and forty learners, this matters less. At a thousand learners, it changes how much time your team spends hunting for information.
3. Selling courses
If your Moodle site is a storefront, RemUI is built for it: enrolment pages designed to convert, course ratings, filtered catalogues, pricing page templates and Edwiser Bridge for selling through WooCommerce. Almond does not offer equivalents, so you would rely on Moodle’s defaults plus whatever payment plugin you install.
4. Moodle version support
Moodle 5.2 arrived on 20 April 2026 and is the current stable release. General bug fixes for 5.1 end in October 2026, so the upgrade clock is already ticking.
Almond publicly lists Moodle 5.2 support and sells a 5.2 licence today. RemUI’s current product page lists Moodle 3.0 through 5.2, and Edwiser’s stated policy is to ship a compatible version within two to three weeks of a Moodle release.
5. Trying before buying
RemUI offers a 15-day free trial that includes installation and configuration help, plus a 30-day money-back guarantee. Almond does not advertise a trial, though the free AlmondB theme lets you sample the studio’s approach and the vendor publishes a digital products refund policy.
If you are choosing on behalf of a committee, the trial matters more than the feature list. A working site is easier to get approved than a spec sheet.
6. Support and the ecosystem
Almond answers email within 24 to 48 hours on weekdays, for verified buyers, on bugs and errors in the theme. Installation help and customisation sit outside that scope, which their FAQ states plainly. For a small team that is often fine.
Edwiser bundles 12 months of support with an annual licence and three years with a lifetime licence, and publishes a 96% happiness score and a two-day resolution time. Around the theme sits a product family: Reports for analytics, RapidGrader for marking, Forms for enrolment and feedback capture, Course Formats, Site Monitor and Bridge for WooCommerce. If your requirements grow, you add a plugin rather than change vendor.
7. Performance and weight
Almond is lighter. It restyles Moodle and adds a block library, and that is roughly the extent of it.
RemUI does more, so it asks for more. The MooDIY review rates RemUI’s performance impact as medium against Almond-class themes at low, and hosting providers specifically recommend Redis session caching and tuned PHP-FPM for it. Edwiser markets fast-loading layouts and ships regular optimisation work, and thousands of large sites run it happily. But if you are on shared hosting with 512MB of PHP memory, test carefully.
Where each theme is the right call
Choose Almond when:
- You run many Moodle sites or subdomains and per-site licensing gets expensive fast.
- You need a presentable front page quickly and Moodle’s default course experience is fine.
- Your budget is a one-time line item with no appetite for renewals.
- You are already on Moodle 5.2 and want a theme that publicly supports it today.
Choose Edwiser RemUI when:
- Learner and teacher experience inside courses matters as much as the home page.
- You want to build marketing pages, pricing pages and course landing pages without a developer.
- You sell courses, or plan to.
- You need dashboards, analytics or reporting depth.
- You want a trial, a refund window and a support team on a named SLA.
- You expect requirements to grow and would rather add plugins than migrate.
Before you decide
Do these four things and the answer usually becomes obvious.
- Load both demos on a phone. Almond’s 5.2 demo and Edwiser’s RemUI demo are both public. Judge the course page, not the home page, because that is where learners spend their time.
- Confirm the Moodle version in writing. Ask both vendors which build supports the exact Moodle version you are running or moving to.
- Count your sites. If the number is above three, run the licence maths before you look at features again.
- Test on staging. Install with your real plugin stack. Theme conflicts show up in gradebook, quiz and SCORM pages, never on the front page.
The verdict
The Almond Moodle Theme is a fair deal for what it sets out to do. It looks current, it installs quickly, it covers unlimited domains, and it charges once. For a small team that needs Moodle to stop looking like 2015, it does the job at a price that is hard to argue with.
Edwiser RemUI is solving a bigger problem. It assumes your Moodle site has to look good, guide learners, help teachers, sell courses and grow, and it ships the dashboards, the builder, the enrolment pages and the plugin family to do all of that. It costs more and it asks more of your hosting. In return, you stop working around Moodle’s defaults.
If your decision comes down to price per domain, Almond is the sensible pick. If it comes down to what your team and learners can actually do once the theme is live, RemUI is the stronger choice, and the 15-day trial means you can prove that on your own site before spending anything.
