Standard hosting vs managed Moodle hosting

Almost every bad Moodle hosting decision starts here. Two plans can look identical on a pricing page and split the work in completely different ways. The line that matters is not shared vs cloud vs VPS. It is whether the host runs the server, or runs Moodle.

Standard hosting

You rent the space. You are the Moodle admin.

Shared plans, VPS and most cloud hosting sit here. The host keeps the hardware, network and hypervisor alive. Everything above that line belongs to you, whether or not anyone on your team signed up for it.

  • Install Moodle and keep the installer's defaults from biting you later
  • Set the cron job, and notice when it silently stops
  • Raise PHP memory, upload limits and max_input_vars past the shared defaults
  • Read every Moodle security advisory and patch inside the disclosure window
  • Test plugin and theme updates before they take the gradebook down
  • Prove your backups restore, not just that they ran
  • Size the server up before enrolment week, then remember to size it back
Managed Moodle hosting

The host runs Moodle, not just the box it sits on.

You get the hardware promise plus the application layer. The provider owns the parts of Moodle that break, and support reads your Moodle logs instead of asking you to paste them into a ticket.

  • Moodle installed, tuned and version-tracked for you
  • Cron, caching and database settings configured for Moodle's workload
  • Core security releases applied without a change request from you
  • Plugin compatibility checked before an update ships
  • Daily backups plus on-demand snapshots before risky changes
  • Capacity planned around enrolment and exam peaks
  • Support staffed by people who have debugged Moodle before

Buyer's Guide

How to Choose the Right Moodle Hosting

Six questions that decide the answer. Work through them before you look at a single price.

Who updates Moodle?

Name the person. If you cannot, you need managed Moodle hosting. Sites that stay two versions behind do it because the upgrade never had an owner, not because the team decided to skip it.

What is your concurrency, not your headcount?

A thousand enrolled learners is meaningless. Two hundred submitting a quiz in the same minute is the number that sizes your server. Plan for your worst hour, not your average day.

Do you need third-party plugins?

If the answer is yes, and for most real deployments it is, MoodleCloud is out at every tier. Check plugin freedom before price, because it is the constraint you cannot buy your way past.

How big will the database get?

Moodle logs, quiz attempts and grade history grow faster than your file storage. Several shared hosts cap a single database at 500 MB to 1 GB, and that ceiling arrives as write errors mid-assessment.

What does year two cost?

Budget hosting advertises a first-term price that often triples at renewal, sometimes on a four-year prepayment. Compare renewal rates, not intro rates, and add the cost of backups if they are an add-on.

Can support read a Moodle log?

Ask the pre-sales team a Moodle-specific question, such as how they handle a failed database upgrade. The quality of that answer predicts what your worst day will look like.

One more, if you are choosing between two finalists. Confirm you can export your database and moodledata without a fee or a support ticket. Providers that make leaving easy tend to be the ones you never want to leave.

Switching hosts

How to move a live Moodle site without breaking it

Works for any host on this list. On managed plans, most of these steps happen for you.

1

Inventory what you actually run

List your Moodle version, PHP version, database engine and every third-party plugin and theme with its version number. This list decides whether a host can take your site as it is.

2

Take a full backup and prove it restore

Navigate to Database dump plus the moodledata directory plus the code directory. Restore it somewhere else before you touch anything. A backup you have never restored is a guess.

3

Build a staging copy on the new host

Move the site to staging first, run cron manually, open a course, submit a quiz and check the gradebook. Bugs show up here, not in a checklist.

4

Lower the DNS TTL, then cut over quietly

Drop your TTL to 300 seconds a day ahead. Put the old site in maintenance mode, sync the final database and files, then switch the record. Pick a low-traffic window, never assessment week.

5

Verify cron, mail and file uploads on day one

These three break most often after a move and fail silently. Confirm cron is running every minute, send a test notification, and upload a large file to check your PHP limits carried over.

6

Keep the old host running for two weeks

Do not cancel on cutover day. Keep the old environment intact and reachable until a full assessment cycle has run on the new one, then take a final archive before you close the account.

EdwiserCloud takes care of everything so you don't have to.

Expert Verdict

After 9 providers, here is where we land

EdwiserCloud is the pick for most Moodle teams

We have worked with Moodle for over 10 years across 20,000+ institutions, and the pattern repeats. Teams buy hosting on price, then spend the next two years paying for it in hours: an upgrade nobody owns, a plugin that breaks the gradebook, a support ticket answered by someone who has never opened a Moodle log. EdwiserCloud is the only host on this list that closes both gaps at once. The Moodle work is handled, and the premium plugin stack most sites end up buying anyway is already in the plan. That combination is why it ranks first, not the infrastructure specs, which several competitors match or beat.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Moodle hosting questions, answered.

What is the difference between managed Moodle hosting and standard hosting?
Standard hosting gives you server space. The host keeps the hardware and network running, and you handle everything above that: installing Moodle, setting cron, tuning PHP and the database, applying security releases, testing plugin updates and restoring backups. Managed Moodle hosting adds the application layer. The provider runs Moodle itself, applies core updates, checks plugin compatibility before shipping changes, and staffs support with people who know Moodle. The word “managed” on a pricing page often means managed server, not managed Moodle, so read the responsibility split before you buy.
For most teams, yes, and often it is cheaper overall. A $10 shared plan that consumes six hours of someone’s month costs more than a $79 managed plan once you price that time honestly. Managed hosting also removes the expensive failure modes: a site stuck two Moodle versions behind, an unpatched security release, a backup nobody tested. Standard hosting wins when you already employ a Moodle admin and want the cheapest infrastructure under them.
EdwiserCloud is our pick for most Moodle sites, and we build it, so weigh that accordingly. It is fully managed, it includes $743 of premium Edwiser products on every plan, migration is free, and support comes from Moodle specialists rather than a general hosting queue. Catalyst IT is the stronger choice for university-scale deployments with formal procurement, and MoodleCloud is the fastest route to a demo site if you do not need any third-party plugins.
Three of them: Moonami, Catalyst IT (a Premium Partner) and KeyToSchool. MoodleCloud is not a partner because it is Moodle HQ’s own hosted service. Moodle currently lists more than 80 Certified Partners worldwide, so the three here are a shortlist of the ones Moodle admins most often compare, not the full field. Partner status is worth having when procurement requires it or when you need Moodle Workplace, and it is not a guarantee of better day-to-day support. EdwiserCloud is not a Certified Partner, and we say so on this page rather than leaving you to find out.
Moodle 5.3 is the next long-term support release, scheduled for 5 October 2026, with security support to 1 October 2029. Managed Moodle hosts should upgrade you as part of the plan. Managed server hosts and shared hosts will only give you a supported PHP version and leave the upgrade to you. Ask three things before you commit: when they will support 5.3, which PHP version they will offer by October, and who tests your third-party plugins against it. Moodle 5.2 already requires PHP 8.3 or newer with the sodium extension and max_input_vars of at least 5000, so a host running an older PHP is a blocker rather than an inconvenience.
Because none of them sells Moodle hosting as a product. To be reviewed here a host needed a Moodle or LMS hosting page of its own, stating publicly what it does for Moodle. A knowledge-base article or a one-click entry in Softaculous does not count. Moodle will run on all three, and if you have an admin who wants raw infrastructure they are reasonable value. But a host that never put its Moodle claims in writing has not planned for cron every minute, for a quiz submission burst, or for who owns your next major upgrade. The full list of six excluded hosts and the reason for each is above.
No. MoodleCloud blocks third-party plugin installation on every tier, from Starter through Standard. That covers Edwiser products, custom themes, bespoke reporting tools and most integrations. If your site needs any plugin beyond Moodle core, you need a host that allows installs, such as EdwiserCloud, KeyToSchool or a self-managed VPS.
You can, and it works for a pilot, a small course library or a training site with a few dozen learners. It stops working when a cohort logs in together. Shared plans cap PHP workers, often restrict cron to every 15 minutes or longer, and several cap a single database at 500 MB to 1 GB. Those limits quietly break course completion, notifications and scheduled backups, and the database ceiling arrives as write errors during an assessment. If your site runs timed quizzes or holds student records, move to a VPS or managed Moodle hosting before your first assessment.
The cheapest advertised self-managed VPS configurations start near $4 a month but are too small for a real cohort. A usable self-managed VPS runs roughly $12 to $60 a month. Managed Moodle hosting typically sits between $10 and $150 a month depending on user count, with MoodleCloud running about $170 to $2,130 a year across its five tiers. Enterprise Moodle Partners quote custom pricing that can reach several thousand a month. Budget for the renewal rate rather than the intro rate, and add the cost of any premium plugins your site needs.
Not any more. MoodleCloud removed its permanent free plan and now offers a 28-day trial only, after which a paid plan is required. Moodle the software is still free and open source, so you can self-host at no licence cost, but you will pay for the server and for whoever maintains it.
Yes. EdwiserCloud migrates sites as they are, so you do not have to upgrade before moving. Be aware that Moodle 5.2 only upgrades from 4.4 or later, so a much older site needs an intermediate hop and that is usually what makes a migration quote larger than expected. If you want to get current after the move, Moodle Upgrade Assist tests the whole version jump on a staging copy first. You review it, you approve it, and only then does it go live.
It should not. A migration done properly runs on a staging copy first, syncs the final data during a quiet window, then switches DNS. Most Moodle sites move to EdwiserCloud in under two hours with learners noticing nothing. Schedule it outside assessment periods anyway, and keep the old host running for a couple of weeks before you cancel.
